HERO Scorecard

HERO Health and Well-being Best Practices Scorecard in Collaboration with Mercer© (HERO Scorecard)

The HERO Scorecard, established in 2006, was designed to help organizations develop multiyear population health and well-being plans, identify opportunities for improvement and measure progress over time.

Developed in consultation with leading authorities on population health and well-being, and informed by research, this industry leading best practices tool provides your organization with an instant assessment of how your strategy compares to others in HERO’s National Scorecard database.

Why Complete the Scorecard

In addition to an instant assessment of how your strategy compares to other HERO Scorecard completers, your organization is helping to advance the field of workplace health and well-being. This happens through the research HERO conducts leveraging data from the National Scorecard database.

How to Complete the Scorecard

With over 3,000 companies having completed the US Scorecard, and over 550 the International version, we’ve developed practical tips and helpful tools to ensure you receive the most value from the Scorecard.

In addition, we invite you to read through a series of Case Studies from past Scorecard Completers.

Successful health and well-being plans are derived from interdepartmental collaboration and program integration. Therefore, many Scorecard completers have found value in printing a PDF copy of the Scorecard prior to submitting the online version for the purpose of meeting with department stakeholders to discuss how to best respond to specific questions, and shed a light on areas of opportunity.

Once responses have been collected, and your organization has a complete set of answers, you’re ready to complete the online Scorecard (we cannot accept PDF versions of the Scorecard). It is important to save and/or download a copy of your responses prior to leaving the online Scorecard, as you may find it useful as a reference when interpreting your score or completing the Scorecard in the future. Know that if there are questions you cannot answer, simply skip the question. You will not score points on any skipped question.

Once you’re ready, select the appropriate link below to enter the online Scorecard and submit your responses.

Tools to Support Scorecard Completion

Scorecard History and Completers

Once you have submitted your answers, your scores will be automatically calculated and sent to the email address provided. The report will include a score for each of the six sections and an overall score. The scoring system is based on a maximum number of 200 points, with the highest score attained to date on the US Scorecard being 182; Internationally 189. We don’t anticipate a completer receiving the maximum score of 200. Reason being, the world of work is ever-evolving, which means the best practices will evolve too.

Therefore, consider your organization’s score relative to those of peer or to emulator organizations and use this information to support your direction. HERO’s Latest Best Practice Scores (U.S. and International) and 2022’s Progress Report can also be used for comparison.

In 2023 and 2024, Special Best Practice Scores for Mental Health; Social Determinants of Health (SDOH); Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI); and Brain Health were compiled from practices listed throughout the Scorecard. Your Scorecard results will include these Special Best Practice Scores.

Reports

Employers can benchmark their programs in greater depth — and against a group of their own peers — through a series of benchmark reports based on employer size, industry and geographic region. These in-depth reports provide the aggregated responses to each Scorecard question as well as the average scores.

In addition to HERO’s published Benchmark reports, there are two opportunities for your organization to obtain Scorecard benchmark data which you can learn more about by visiting each web page:

  1. Benchmark Reports
  2. The Preferred Provider Program

HERO collaborates with the consulting firm Mercer in the development and ongoing operation of the HERO Scorecard. As part of this collaboration, Mercer is responsible for HERO Scorecard data collection and managing the HERO Scorecard database.

The HERO Scorecard questionnaire is hosted on a third-party vendor’s survey platform under Mercer’s supervision, and a copy of the database resides on Mercer’s servers. The database is secured by Mercer in the same manner as it secures its own databases containing confidential survey data. Mercer strictly limits access to the HERO Scorecard database to the staff members in its Research unit who manage the database, and their access is solely for the purpose of fulfilling obligations to licensees and Benchmark Report customers.

Occasionally, Mercer collaborates with HERO to conduct new data analysis that is made available to Preferred Providers through commentaries or published research reports. All individual responses to the HERO Scorecard are kept confidential and individual company results are only released from the database with the permission of the respondent.

HERO has partnered with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to create the HERO Worker Well-Being Clearinghouse – Powered by the NIOSH WellBQ (HERO Worker Well-Being Clearinghouse), an open-source database that houses de-identified data arising from use of the English and Spanish versions of the NIOSH Worker Well-Being Questionnaire (NIOSH WellBQ). HERO has made the NIOSH WellBQ available in an online survey platform to enable organizations to easily administer it to employees. Organizations will receive a de-identified, summary report of the data collected from their unique questionnaire link. De-identified data will be imported into the HERO Worker Well-Being Clearinghouse for public use by individuals interested in conducting research on worker well-being.*
