David Ballard Shares HERO Forum23 Insight in New Video Interviews
HERO Forum23 is less than a month away and few are more excited than our very own Senior Fellow, David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA. Dr. Ballard recently gave two brief video interviews where he provides helpful insight on what attendees can expect at HERO Forum23, which will be held September 27-29 in Salt Lake City, with a theme of “Doing Well by Doing Good: How Responsible Organizations are Addressing Societal Challenges.” Dr. Ballard also shares how HERO Forum23 will be different from past HERO Forums and why this year’s theme is particularly relevant and resonant.
General Session Interview
According to Dr. Ballard, the HERO Forum23 General Session will feature fewer talking heads and sequential presentations with more facilitated, fast-paced panels that address a range of topics aligned with this year’s theme and how we can work together to advance it. Dr. Ballard even gleefully hints at an “element of danger” in the updated format.

ESG and Well-being Interview
In this interview, Dr. Ballard shares why he believes this year’s theme is particularly relevant and resonant, noting how workplace health and well-being efforts align with critical issues such as conserving natural resources and renewable energy as well as topics like promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion and engaging in fair labor practices. “These are not political issues,” says Ballard. “They are real issues that every organization is dealing with, and the health and well-being elements in these organizations are critical to success. It’s time for us to step up and take a bigger role and be at the table.”

Changing the Way We Work: Well-Being in Healthcare Workplaces, Policies, and Practices
Tuesday, September 26, 2023 | 8:00 am – 1:30 pm MDT
Salt Lake Marriott Downtown at City Creek
5 CHES/MCHES Credits Available
The circumstances of the last several years have exacerbated ongoing challenges of stress, fatigue, burnout, and mental strain among healthcare workers, leading to significant turnover and decreased employee engagement. There is a need to innovate and change how we work by addressing the environments, policies, programs, and practices we use to support healthcare workforce well-being. During this year’s Healthcare Summit, we will connect the dots between employee health and well-being obstacles that healthcare organizations are facing, with potential system-level solutions found in the Total Worker Health® Model; Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) strategy alignment; and the new Workforce Mental Health and Well-being models.
Guest speakers will be sharing research and real-world examples from Stanford Medicine Healthcare, OhioHealth, Intermountain Healthcare, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the South Carolina Hospital Association.

This HERO “power shift” Think Tank seeks to identify those methods and tools that assess the needs and values of today’s changing workforce. We will discuss changes in employee preferences related to demographics and changes in work arrangements and identify key factors related to employees’ sense of belongingness in organizations. In discussing drivers of disengagement and discontent, we intend to surface those strategies and approaches that increase employee satisfaction and commitment to organizations. We will explore how employee health and well-being initiatives can be organized in support of sustainable cultures of caring and trust that attract and retain a robust workforce.

Fourth Annual HERO FitVent Invitational Team Steps Challenge
Have you ever been part of an athlete’s “signing day”? It’s the culmination of a lot of planning and preparation. The athlete has trained physically and mentally for peak performance. Then there are the scouts and discussions about team dynamics and determining a good fit. All leading to the day when the final decision is made and publicized.
You’ll have your own “signing day” opportunity in a few weeks with the opening of registration for the 4th Annual FitVent Invitational Team Steps Challenge. And you can start preparing now for all of the decisions you’ll need to make when you register:
- Which company will you support in the corporate competition for “Most Members Participating” and “Highest Average Steps”?
- Will you form your own team of 5 individuals or join another? Or will you be a free agent and wait to be “picked up” by another team?
- If forming your own team, have you decided on a team color and mascot?
- If joining another team, do you know what the team color and mascot are?
Now you’re prepared to register! Watch for detailed sign-up instructions in September.

Shifting Perspective Using National and Natural Resources to Enhance Well-Being
A Forum Preview Webinar
Thursday, September 7, 2023
12:00 pm CT | 1:00 pm ET
1 CHES/MCHES Credit Available
When we see things differently, we think differently, feel differently, and behave differently. The pandemic has impacted our lives in a multitude of ways including the dynamics of our relationships with co-workers, friends, and family and requires social “undistancing” to re-establish relationships and meaningful connection. One positive impact has been a rekindled appreciation of nature for many who had an opportunity to rediscover why the great outdoors are so great in the first place. This webinar will share the impact of well-being challenges with a hybrid approach to creating virtual experiences that inspire real life adventures and connection to meet employees’ ever-changing needs in today’s constantly evolving landscape.
The Power of Habits Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Wednesday, October 11, 2023
12:00 pm CT | 1:00 pm ET
While popular culture and research often tout “habit formation” as a winning behavior-change strategy, there is little support showing that it can cultivate sustainable changes in complex lifestyle behaviors. Yet, without sustained change, our initiatives can’t help employees increase their health and well-being, nor can they achieve a ROI on health promotion investments. It’s time for our field to go beyond conventional thinking and examine whether the assumptions underlying habit formation hold up under scrutiny.
